Cereal Herbs

To improve natural fodder lands and increase productivity of hays and pastures excluded from the active treatment, and at the lands near the settlements, cereal herbs varieties with high drought tolerance and yields were created.

Syvash

Biological characteristics. Plants height is 140-148.6 cm, the shrub is erect, well-leafed. The leaves are about 43.9%. The leaf has middle width, it is soft, dark green colored in the autumn of the year of sowing. The panicle is erect, middle to long sized, dark grey colored with violet hue, seeds are lancet-shaped, middle-sized. The 1000 seed weight is 3.63-3.96 g.

The variety of hay-pasture use was created for the renewal of natural grasslands in the conditions of the South Steppe of Ukraine. The middle-ripening variety. The period of vegetation from spring growth renewal to harvest ripening of the first mowing is 36-42 days, seeds are formed in 89-96 days. It is resistant to logging and seed dropping. It is technological. The longevity in herbage is 11-15 years.

Yields. The smooth brome population variety Syvash provides green mass yield of 46 t/ha in the natural conditions of The South of Ukraine; seed yield is 0.43 t/ha, hay yield is 12.09 t/ha. The protein content in the green mass is 18.7%, the cellulose content is 25.6%. Protein yields is 24.1 t/ha.

Borozenskiy 7

Biological characteristics. Winter variety, winter resistant, middle-ripening, seeds ripe in 88-90 days in the conditions of the South Steppe Zone. Fodder mass of the first mowing is formed in 50-52 days under intensive early-spring use. The variety forms 1-2 mowings in the non-irrigated conditions.

Yields. The yields obtained in the competitive variety testing: green mass – 35.2-46.0 t/ha; hay – 8.8-12.0 t/ha; seeds – 0.45 t/ha. The variety is highly resistant to the brown rust, powdery mildew. It is drought-tolerant.

The variety is for hay-pasture use in grass mixes with leguminous herbs in farms with different types of ownership. The longevity of the productive herbage is 10-15 years with Nitrogen mineral fertilizers application. This fact gives facilities to introduction to the programs of the natural grasslands renewal in the South Steppe Zone.

The variety had been entered in the State Register since 2009.


Tavriyskiy

Biological characteristics. Winter variety, winter resistant. The middle-ripening variety. The seeds ripe in 88-90 days in the conditions of the South Steppe Zone. Fodder mass of the first mowing is formed in 50-52 days under the intensive early-spring growth. The variety forms 5-6 mowings during the vegetation period in the irrigated conditions. It is high (height of the generative shoots is 136.0-158.3 cm). The shrub is erect, thin, resistant to logging. The tillering is high (229.1 shoots per plant). The leaves are about 41.9%. After seed harvesting it forms high herbage yield. It is tolerant to high summer temperatures and drought. It is tolerant to high groundwater level and water flooding for the period of 45-56 days.

Yields. The biological potential of the variety is 67.83 t/ha of green mass; hay yield is 22.73 t/ha; seed yield is 0.78 t/ha with irrigation. In the non-irrigated conditions of SVK “Borozenske” of Velykoalexandrivskiy district of Kherson region 0.38 t/ha of seeds was obtained from 40 ha of the nursery.

Ingulka 17

Biological characteristics. Early-ripening winter variety. Ripens in 68-70 days in the conditions of the South Steppe. The mowing ripeness is reached in 44-50 days at early-spring intensive growth. The variety is winter resistant.

The variety is high (height of the generative shoots is 117-120 cm), the shrub is erect, thin. The average tillering is 112.5-114.0 shoots per plant. The variety is well-leafed, resistant to logging.

The variety is suitable for cultivation both in the irrigated and non-irrigated conditions of agriculture.

Yields data. The yields in competitive variety testing without irrigation were 37.21 t/ha of green mass; 9.3 t/ha o hay; 0.4 t/ha of seeds.

It is characterized with high resistance to the brown rust, powdery mildew. The variety is highly drought tolerant. It is sown in grass mixes with alfalfa, smooth brome when used under the hay and pasture use.

Oleshka 14

Biological characteristics. Winter variety, winter resistant. The middle-ripening variety. The seeds ripe in 88-90 days in the conditions of the South Steppe Zone. Fodder mass of the first mowing is formed in 50-52 days under the intensive early-spring growth

The variety is high (height of the generative shoots is 130-135 cm), the shrub is erect, thin, resistant to logging. The leaves are about 44-50%. The leaves are long, lancet-shaped, brightly green colored, soft, pubescent. The panicle is moderately compressed, with the length of 15.5-18.2 cm, without awns, yellow colored. The spikelets are egg-shaped, gathered in whorls.

When sown in the late summer term, it forms well-developed plants, which are characterized with high competitive potential to weeds in the compact-rowed crops. After seeds harvesting, in the well-moistured conditions it forms good yield of the high-quality fodder mass.

The variety is characterized with high resistance to the brown rust and powdery mildew.

The variety is of the half-intensive southern ecotype. It is resistant to the impact of high temperatures and drought tolerant.

Yields. The biological potential of the variety is: 66.0 t/ha of green mass; 20.7 t/ha of hay; 0.48 t/ha of seeds. The longevity of the productive herbage is 6-8 years.

Khersonska rannia 1

Biological characteristics. Winter variety. The early-ripening variety. The seeds ripe in 68-72 days in the conditions of the South Steppe Zone. Mowing ripeness is achieved in 46-52 days under the intensive early-spring growth. The variety is winter resistant.

The variety is high (height of the generative shoots is 120-130 cm). The shrub is erect, thin. The average tillering is 144.5 shoots per plant. It is resistant to logging. The leaves are about 40.0-48.3%.

When sown in the late summer term, it forms well-developed plants. They are characterized with high competitive potential to weeds. After seeds harvesting it forms good yield of the high-quality ottawa fodder mass.

The resistance to the powdery mildew is high, and upper-intermediate to the brown rust.

The variety is intensive, belongs to the grassland-steppe ecotype. It is very responsible to Nitrogen fertilizers applied in pre-mowing period at N30 rates. The variety is tolerant to the high groundwater level. It is resistant to the impact of high temperatures and drought tolerant.

Yields data. The biological potential of the variety is: 66.1 t/ha of green mass; 20.7 t/ha of hay; 0.42 t/ha of seeds. In the irrigated conditions during the 18-years period 56.4 t/ha of green mass, 18.1 t/ha of hay and 0.37 t/ha of conditional seeds were obtained.

The variety is sown in grass mixes with alfalfa, smooth brome when used under the hay and pasture use.


Kimburn

Biological characteristics. The variety of hay-pasture use. It was created for growing in the natural grasslands and pastures under the rainfed and irrigated conditions of the South Steppe Zone of Ukraine. It is middle-ripening variety. The period of vegetation from spring growth renewal to the first mowing is 30-33 days.

The plants height is 90.0-103.3 cm. The shrub is erect. The leaves are about 40-44%. The leaf is long, soft, brightly green colored. The ear is erect, long-egged shaped, from middle to long. The 1000 seeds weight is 1.74-1.96 g.

It is resistant to logging. It is resistant to infestation by the brown rust and smut. The resistance to winter is high. Under the proper cultivation technology the productive herbage longevity is 15 years and even more.

Yields. In the natural conditions it forms 8.2 t/ha of dry matter and 0.5-0.6 t/ha of seeds. In the irrigated conditions dry matter yields in average is 14.3 t/ha; seeds yield is 0.8-1.0 t/ha.

Zhaivoronok

Biological characteristics. The variety of hay-pasture use. It was created for growing in the natural grasslands and pastures under the rainfed and irrigated conditions of the South Steppe Zone of Ukraine. It is early-ripening variety. The period of vegetation from spring growth renewal to the first mowing is 25-30 days.

The plants height is 82.8-101.5 cm. The shrub is erect, well-leafed. The leaf is long, soft, brightly green colored. The ear is erect, long-egged shaped, from middle to long. The 1000 seeds weight is 1.77-1.90 g.

It is resistant to logging. It is resistant to infestation by the brown rust, powdery mildew and smut. The winter resistance is high.

Yields. In the natural moistening conditions it forms 8.8 t/ha of dry matter and 0.45 t/ha of seeds.
